Employees are the heart of every company. During expansion, it’s important to find candidates that possess the right skills to fuel growth and fulfill organizational needs. A successful recruiting venture in Bangladesh requires a careful blend of strategic practices and cultural alignment strategies to ensure a seamless integration of new team members.

Recruiting in Bangladesh

As in many other countries, the most common channels for recruitment in Bangladesh are professional networking and online career sites.

Laws against discrimination in Bangladesh

Under the constitution, all people in Bangladesh are equal in the eyes of the law. They are protected against discrimination on the basis of:

  • Religion
  • Race
  • Sex
  • Lineage
  • Place of birth

To ensure fairness, you should be mindful of the language you use while recruiting in Bangladesh. This guidance applies to meetings, interviews, and conversations with prospective hires. It also applies to the language used in job postings. Companies should avoid mentioning any of the protected characteristics outlined in the constitution.

How to hire employees in Bangladesh

There’s no universal way to hire employees in Bangladesh, but the law requires companies to draft an employment contract that outlines everything from compensation and benefits to termination requirements. Make sure you list all salary and compensation amounts in taka (BDT) rather than another currency.

Bangladesh employment laws

To stay compliant with Bangladesh employment laws, companies need to ensure employees are working the right number of hours. Traditionally, employees work 48 hours in a standard workweek, spread across 6 days, with each day comprising 8 hours of work. However, 5-day workweeks are becoming increasingly common. Overtime is permitted with an overall limit of 60 working hours in any week and a weekly average of 56 hours in any year. If an employee works overtime, the hourly overtime pay rate is calculated as follows: Monthly wages + dearness allowances + ad hoc or interim allowance (if any) x 2 x OT hours / 208 hours*. For example, if a worker in Bangladesh receives a total monthly package of BDT 15,000, their overtime pay per hour for 3 hours would be approximately BDT 432 (15,000 ×2 x3 /208).

* This formula standardizes a month to 208 working hours, so overtime pay is calculated by doubling the total of monthly wages, allowances, and interim wage, and adjusts it to the proportion of overtime hours worked.

Onboarding in Bangladesh

Bangladesh employment laws do not stipulate a standard onboarding procedure. However, there are some steps you can take to make employees more comfortable during their first week. Start by going over the employment contract, offer letter, company code of conduct, and other key documents. You can also arrange for a few employees to start the first week together to encourage team bonding.
