Expanding Your Business to the United Arab Emirates

Date

Share

U.S. companies looking to expand internationally have been considering the United Arab Emirates (UAE) a key destination for some time now. And for good reason.

The UAE is comprised of seven areas known as “Emirates.” They are:

  • Abu Dhabi
  • Ajman
  • Dubai
  • Fujairah
  • Ras al-Khaimah
  • Sharjah
  • Umm al-Quwain

As Faisal Amin, client services associate at Globalization Partners, explains most organization hiring salespeople in the UAE would focus on the emirates of Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

The UAE is a business-friendly country. Here, a company could take advantage of doing business in one of the country’s various “free-trade zones,” which are areas that have special tax, customs, and imports regimes governed by their own framework of regulations. Dubai has over 20 free-trade zones.

There are two options for establishing a permanent business in the UAE:

  1. Through joint partnerships on the mainland, or
  2. Through a free-trade zone.

Interesting fact: The workweek in the UAE is Sunday through Thursday, while the weekend is Friday and Saturday. Which means managing remote employees in this country will take some planning.
