Your company needs a team of employees in the Cayman Islands to grow there, and the first step in building a solid team is hiring the right people. Knowing the country’s labor laws and general expectations will streamline the hiring process, getting your new employees up to speed and productive much more efficiently.

Recruiting in the Cayman Islands

Companies looking to hire in the Cayman Islands must post their jobs on the JobsCayman portal for at least two weeks. Posting on the portal allows your company to reach applicants and verifies that your vacancy is legitimate.

Another option for recruiting workers in the Cayman Islands is to partner with a recruitment agency. Companies are encouraged to hire Cayman Island-based individuals first but can expand their search to nonresidents if necessary.

The recruitment process in the Cayman Islands

The Labour Act covers the process of recruiting and hiring in the Cayman Islands. The act outlines the minimum standards under which employees in the Cayman Islands must work. It also states that nothing prohibits employers from going above and beyond the minimum requirements.

How to hire Cayman Islands-based employees

Cayman Island-based employees must receive a written employment contract within 10 days of starting work. Your company can negotiate contract terms with employees during the hiring process. Each contract must include:

  1. A job title and a brief description of the job and its responsibilities
  2. Regular work hours
  3. The employee’s compensation and how it’s calculated
  4. Payment periods
  5. The hourly equivalent, if an employee’s pay is calculated by another method
  6. The employment period, if not indefinite
  7. The probation period, if applicable
  8. The employee’s holiday and sick leave entitlement
  9. Notice requirements

Cayman Islands employment laws

The standard workday in the Cayman Islands is no longer than nine hours. Employees shouldn’t work more than 45 hours during 168-hour periods. Employees who work more than 45 hours a week may be eligible for overtime pay unless both parties agree that overtime pay isn’t necessary.

Employees in the Cayman Islands should be paid at least once a month. Within one week of paying employees, companies must provide a written statement detailing how the payment was made and what deductions were taken from it.

There isn’t a set onboarding process in the Cayman Islands, but there are steps your company can take to make new hires feel welcome and get them up to speed quickly. Be sure to review:

  1. The employment contract
  2. Expectations of the role
  3. Your company’s code of conduct and harassment policies
