Podcast: Why Global Business Expansion is Best Left To Experts

December 2017

Globalization Partners CEO Nicole Sahin appeared recently on the Outperform podcast by affiliate and digital marketing agency Acceleration Partners where she discussed the Global Professionals Organization model, how challenging it is to expand a business globally, and how Sahin got her start in global business.

Host Bob Glazer, founder and managing director of Acceleration Partners, asked Sahin about the nuances of the Global PEO model, and how it may impact an employee in another country.

“It’s just important that the client says that this person is still 100 percent a member of their team, that they’re engaged, and that they’ll be treated like all the other members of their workforce,” Sahin says. “As long as those expectations are set…things tend to go very smoothly.”

The discussion later turned to the risk a company may expose itself to by trying to skirt the labor laws of a country by hiring independent contractors instead of going the compliant route and bringing them on full time.

Glazer, on global expansion: “I’ll see a 100-person company with eight offices, and I’m thinking, ‘They’re probably not doing this right.’ …Our markets are fairly deregulated versus some of these other countries. I get the sense people are probably violating numerous laws.”

“I agree completely,” Sahin says. “When they say, ‘Let’s just hire all these people and pay them as contractors,’ they’re incurring a huge risk.”
