Employment Contracts in Ghana

It is legally required to put a written employment contract in place in Ghana, in English, which spells out the terms of the employee’s compensation, benefits, and termination requirements. An offer letter and employment contract in Ghana should always state the salary and any compensation amounts in Ghanaian cedi rather than a foreign currency.

Working Hours in Ghana

In general, Ghanaians work an 8 hour day, 5 days per week.

Vacation Days in Ghana

Employees are generally entitled to at least 15 days of paid annual leave.

Ghana Sick Leave

There is no specific time period for sick leave given in the labor code.

Maternity/Paternity Leave in Ghana

Female employees are generally entitled to 12 weeks of paid maternity leave.

Ghana is working on passing legislation to mandate 5 days of paternity leave.

Health Insurance in Ghana

Ghana has national health insurance which provides basic health services to all citizens.

Termination/Severance in Ghana

A employment contract may be terminated for just cause. Weekly workers are entitled to 7 days’ notice; workers on a contract of less than 3 years are entitled to 2 weeks’ notice. Workers with longer contracts are entitled to 1 month’s notice.

If an employment contract includes an “at will” clause, then no notice need be given.

Termination notices should be in writing.

Paying Taxes in Ghana

Employers contribute 13% of wages to social security. Employees contribute 5.5% of their wages.
