Types of Work Visas in Uganda

Any foreign national who plans to travel to Uganda for work purposes will need to get a work permit. This requirement applies to paid employment as well as volunteer work. Foreign workers should carefully choose the right type of work permit before beginning the application process. The work permit categories for foreigners in Uganda include:

  • Class A and A2: These work permits are available to government and diplomatic services workers as well as government contractors.
  • Class B: Foreign nationals who plan to invest in the Ugandan agricultural industry should apply for this work permit.
  • Class C: This permit applies to foreign nationals who plan to invest in the mining industry.
  • Class D: This work permit is for applicants who plan to conduct business or trade in Uganda.
  • Class E: Manufacturers who plan to invest in a manufacturing business or establish a new one in Uganda should apply for this category of work permit.
  • Class F: This permit applies to working professionals who intend to travel to Uganda to practice their profession.
  • Glass G1 and G2: These work permits apply to missionaries, volunteers, and foreign individuals who work for non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Requirements to Obtain Uganda Work Visas

The requirements for a Ugandan work permit can vary based on which category your employees fall under. Some of the basic requirements include:

  • A valid passport
  • A duly completed application form
  • Two passport photographs
  • A cover letter
  • A letter of appointment from the employing company based in Uganda
  • A police background check from the applicant’s country of residence
  • Copies of any certificates demonstrating the applicant’s qualifications for the job

Application Process

Foreign nationals who plan to travel to Uganda should apply well in advance of their planned departure date. Most applicants begin the process by getting in touch with the nearest Ugandan embassy or consulate for an up-to-date list of the requirements for the specific visa or permit needed.

After confirming the requirements, applicants should gather all necessary materials and complete the application for the appropriate work permit. Upon completing the application, the employee should submit it to the officials at the Ugandan embassy for approval.

Once the visa or permit is approved, the applicant can travel to Uganda and begin working.

Other Important Considerations

Foreign employees who plan to travel to Uganda with a work permit can bring family members along, but they’ll need to provide additional documents with their application if they choose to do so. Additional requirements may include marriage or birth certificates for accompanying family members.

Foreign employees should also be aware that Ugandan work permits are employer-specific. Should the employee change jobs in Uganda, they’ll need to apply for a new work permit.
