It is best practice to put a written employment contract in place in Sierra Leone, in the local language, which spells out the terms of the employee’s compensation, benefits, and termination requirements. An offer letter and employment contract in Sierra Leone should always state the salary and any compensation amounts in Sierra Leonean leone (SLE) rather than another currency.

Working hours in Sierra Leone

The Sierra Leone work week is generally 40 hours. Overtime is paid at an additional 50%, and work on rest days is paid at an additional 100%.

Severance pay is between 30 and 40 days per year served:

  • For a worker with 1 year of tenure: 8.4 weeks of salary
  • For a worker with 5 years of tenure: 47 weeks of salary
  • For a worker with 10 years of tenure: 132 weeks of salary
