Employment contracts in Ghana

It is legally required to put a written employment contract in place in Ghana, in English, which spells out the terms of the employee’s compensation, benefits, and termination requirements. An offer letter and employment contract in Ghana should always state the salary and any compensation amounts in Ghanaian cedi rather than another currency.

Working hours in Ghana

In general, employees work an 8-hour day, 5 days per week.

Vacation days in Ghana

Employees are generally entitled to at least 15 days of paid annual leave.

Ghana sick leave

There is no specific time period for sick leave outlined in the labor code.

Maternity and paternity leave in Ghana

Expecting employees are generally entitled to 12 weeks of paid maternity leave.

Ghana is working on passing legislation to mandate 5 days of paternity leave, but currently, there is no provision for it in the law. It’s typically at the employer’s discretion.

Health insurance in Ghana

Ghana has national health insurance which provides basic health services to all citizens.

Termination/severance in Ghana

There is no at-will employment in Ghana. Termination needs to be justified, and companies must follow correct procedure. The following notice periods are applicable:

  • Weekly workers: 7 days’ notice
  • Workers on a contract of less than 3 years: 2 weeks’ notice
  • Workers with longer contracts: 1 months’ notice

Paying taxes in Ghana

Employers contribute 13% of wages to social security. Employees contribute 5.5% of their wages.
