Benin is a great country to expand to if you’re looking to create ties to other African countries or cater to a new market. To build a compliant team in Benin, it’s essential to ensure all international hires have the appropriate work visa.

Types of work visas in Benin

A Benin visa is an official document from the government authorizing someone to enter the country. It is an electronic visa that is applied for online and delivered to the applicant’s email address.

The validity of the e-Visa is either 30 or 90 days. The type of visa required for entry into Benin depends on the intended length of stay. Applications should be submitted at least 7 days before the date of entry but no more than 90 days prior to the arrival date. Several countries, including many African nations, are exempt from visa requirements.

Requirements to obtain Benin work visas

To work in Benin, international employees need to apply for a work permit, which is completed online by the employer. Some of the documents required for the application include the following:

  • Completed online application form
  • Medical certificate of fitness issued by an approved labor inspector
  • Extract from the applicant’s criminal record dated less than 3 months
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Copy of a valid passport
  • Payment of the administrative fees

The General Directorate of Labor in agreement with the Ministry of Labor will typically issue a work permit within 30 days from the submission of the online application. The work permit is temporary and valid for 12 months, but renewable prior to its expiration.

Application process

It’s important to remember that companies cannot obtain work permits for employees without a registered entity in Benin. The application is submitted to the authorities by the local entity.

Other important considerations

The Benin government has recently invested in digitalizing eVisas and work permits to ensure a smooth application process. It’s important to ensure that the details and documentation provided are accurate and up to date to avoid any delays.
