Citizens of EU member states, EEA countries, and Switzerland generally don’t need a France work visa or work permit to work in France, though standard employment onboarding rules still apply and separate requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA/Swiss family members or posted worker situations. All other nationals must apply for or secure a work permit or residence visa before arrival.

Questi includono:

Il "Passaporto del Talento" ( Passeport Talent )

A Talent Passport is a multiyear residence permit that is typically valid for up to four years, depending on the applicant’s situation and the duration of the employment contract, assignment, or project. It is generally renewable if the holder continues to meet the eligibility conditions and applies before expiry.

  • EU Blue Card: Applicants generally need either a diploma showing at least three years of higher education or five years’ comparable professional experience. They must also have a French employment contract or binding job offer lasting at least one year and meet the salary threshold, commonly cited as at least EUR 53,836.50 gross per year, subject to verification at the time of application.
  • Qualified employee (salarié qualifié): Applicants generally need an eligible French higher-education diploma at least equivalent to a master’s degree, an employment contract in France for more than 3 months, and gross annual salary of at least EUR 43,243.
  • Employee on assignment (salarié en mission): This permit is for intra-company transfers within a group. Applicants need at least three months’ seniority in the group, a French employment contract with the French employing entity, and a gross annual salary of at least EUR 39,582.

Permesso standard ( salarié )

When a role doesn’t meet Talent Passport criteria, For a standard salarié work authorization, the employer generally must justify the hire under ordinary French work permit rules, including showing a genuine job offer, compliant employment terms, and that no suitable candidate already authorized to work in France or the EU/EEA was available. Evidence requirements may vary by role, sector, local practice, and whether the job is treated as a shortage occupation.

The initial permit is typically a long-stay visa that’s equivalent to a residence permit (visa de long séjour valant titre de séjour, or VLS-TS). This is generally valid for 4 to 12 months, depending on the visa category. To stay beyond its validity, the holder usually applies for the appropriate residence permit before the VLS-TS expires, rather than renewing the VLS-TS itself.

Autorizzazione al lavoro di breve durata

A Schengen short-stay visa can’t be used for work assignments that are less than 90 days. The employer must get a temporary work authorization (autorisation de travail provisoire) before work begins. This is needed for jobs such as once-off audits, temporary IT support, or short-term projects.

  1. Employer applies for work authorization: The employer submits a work authorization (autorisation de travail) application through the dedicated administration numérique pour les étrangers en France (ANEF) online portal. The regional authority for labor and employment, Direction régionale de l’économie, de l’emploi, du travail et des solidarités (DREETS), then reviews the application
  2. Employee applies for visa: Once the work authorization is approved, the employee applies for a VLS-TS at the French consulate or embassy in their country of residence. They must include the approved work authorization in the application. Other documents needed include a copy of the employment contract, proof of qualifications, certified translations of non-French documents, and proof of medical or travel insurance covering medical expenses, hospitalization, and repatriation for the required period; a fixed EUR 30,000 minimum is generally associated with Schengen short-stay visas rather than all France long-stay work visas, so applicants should follow the France-Visas checklist for their specific visa category and consulate
  3. Employee validates visa after arrival: The employee must validate their VLS-TS online through the official French visa validation process within three months of arriving in France.
  4. Employee applies for multi-year residence card: Before the one-year VLS-TS expires, the employee must apply for a multi-year residence card (carte de séjour pluriannuelle) to continue living and working in France. This must be done at their local prefecture

The Talent Passport lets the main France work permit holder’s spouse and minor children get a family residence permit (Passeport Talent - Famille) right away. The spouse can also legally work in France as soon as they arrive.

There’s a  stricter family reunification process (regroupement familial) for most other permit types. This usually happens after the main work permit holder has lived lawfully in the country for at least 18 months, although some permit categories and family routes have different rules or exceptions.
