Myanmar is located in Southeast Asia and has a population of nearly 54 million. The capital city of Myanmar is Naypyidaw which has a population of 930,000.

Myanmar (or Burma as it was known then) was colonized by the British in 1824. The country remained under their rule until the Second World War, when Japan invaded and it became a major battleground. Burma achieved independence in 1948. The country was later renamed as Myanmar after the suppression of an uprising in 1989. The name Myanmar acts as a formal version of Burma in the Burmese language, but in English translation, the names appear differently. It’s only in recent years that many English-speaking countries, like the United States, started using Myanmar in their mentions of the country, but both names are used interchangeably.

In Myanmar, employment contracts can be oral or written, but it’s best practice to put a strong, written contract in place, in Burmese, which spells out the terms of the employee’s compensation, benefits, and termination requirements. An offer letter and employment contract in Myanmar should always state the salary and any compensation amounts in Burmese Kyat rather than a foreign currency.
